I guess that you missed the point, Ken.
I've built a 20' x 19" kayak. I've spent time in racing shells (also known as fine boats or just shells) There are a number of different types of canoes of various length to beam ratios. As described, a 24' x 2.5' boat would have a length to beam ratio of less than 10:1 that isn't particularly extreme. I've just never heard a boat referred to as a "needle boat". Even John Paramore, the guy that posted the original picture sounded confused by Kirk's post.
I learned my lesson last year when somebody mentioned a narrow boat. I thought that they were merely talking about a boat that was narrow. It turns out that "A narrowboat or narrow boat is a boat of a distinctive design, made to fit the narrow canals of Great Britain." So now, when someone uses a term that I'm unfamiliar with, I look it up. That didn't help with "needle boat".
The nautical world has developed a comprehensive lexicon to describe many fine distinctions. Since we're dealing in a solely written medium, let's try to use terms that are broadly accepted. It might cut down on some of the confusion.
