that was a great effort by Miller and Bontoft. The boat is well capable of much higher speeds - they used data loggers and developed it from 40 mph to 100mph plus on the gps in less than 10 runs. I wrote an article on it with Lohring Miller (since then computer ate my homework) if I can get a copy I will post it here
I raced power boats and I could not imagine anything worse than being on that lake in those conditions head 18" above the water at 100 mph!!!
They had lots left in their batts (lithium cobalt) I hope they are able to give it another go sometime soon

Hi DRHitch (?),
I'm not trying to downplay the development effort in the Regen Nautique boat, but this isn't really an electric speed record. Three years ago there was "World record, fastest electric boat 98.806mph" Here's the YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yNu2_LlO9s
Without qualifying which types of boats that they are excluding, 85kts has been the "electric speed barrier" for a while. And then there was the competition slalom ski production electric boat that we've discussed a couple of times. But it's nice to hear about more companies trying to push their limits...
