Re: [Electric Boats] Re: What happens when an electric motor gets wet.

I've got to say , I'm a little disappointed in the result of the responses to this question.
Thank you all , for your response .ut it appears a diesel hybrid could be compromised by a dose of sea water in the electric motor.
I would have thought the Nanni hybrid would be more robust , but apparently not .
I'm sort of reluctant to throw a lot of money at something that is going to let me down if the going gets tough.

But Pastor , I'm not just motoring in the harbor!.
I want to fish under sail in open waters , with the help of an electric drive.
I get out of the harbor ASAP.
I got a response back from the Nanni dealers , to the question of "how would the hybrid cope with sea water in the bilge".
The response was "I don't think the hybrid would like a wet bilge".

I can tell you that from my first experience just motoring in the harbor, electric drive is the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I am doing a men's retreat this weekend, and I will have much more data next week.  But simply motoring in the harbor with electric drive made me jump up and down and sing.

I just installed our system and the charger just arrived today – so I haven't had a chance to sail yet with our new electric motor, but I will let you all know how it goes.

I will be keeping a log on our site:  www.electricsailboat.net

Thanks Eric , thats in my "favorites".

The more I research on this electric motorsailing , the more it appeals to me.

Last night I did an internet search , and found lots of people who swear by it , that it takes little electric power to make their boats sail a whole lot better.

I'm going sailing Sunday , and maybe Saturday , and Tuesday , I'll have a play around then.

But I know what I will find , that motorsailing will make a good boat even better , and that really , its not good for the diesel , its not working hard enough.
I can't wait to get in to this project , I reckon it will give me a new lease of life , on the water.

Rob,

I've seen similar material from Nanni.  The reference to the cooling temperatures is that the cooling water must be below 30 C to provide adequate cooling.  "The temperature of the entering coolant (seawater) must not exceed 30°C. The circulation of the coolant should be at least 4 litres / minute."  The motor will be operating at higher temperatures than that.

But all of this is very typical for a straight diesel installation, so the hybrid should not present any unique problems.

Alternatively, you might consider a Mastervolt hybrid system.  Their systems (4.8kW or 9.6kW) will attach to almost any diesel engine up to 45hp (might not be enough for your boat).  While air cooled, it does have forced cooling, and Mastervolt is a large enough global company that reliability should not be as much of a concern as some of the smaller vendors like we regularly see on this group.  Here's a photo  http://www.mastervolt.com/marine/products/hybridmaster/hybridmaster-96/  and here's a technical drawing of their 4.8kW system  http://images.mastervolt.nl/files/hybridmaster48.pdf

It may be worth getting prices to properly vet your project options.
