Re: [Electric Boats] Portable generators

Hi all!

I contacted Duffy Boats by email with the following questions regarding the usage of a portable generator on board their electric catamaran:

- Can I operate the generator while it's inside the compartment or do I have to put it on the swim platform?
- Do I have to connect a hose for the exhaust?
- Can I run the generator with the hatch/door closed?
- Is extra ventilation required (ex: fan?) so that there is no heat build up in the compartment?
- Does operating a portable generator on a boat approved by the Coast Guard?

See below their answer:

Sir,

The generator will provide power for one of the chargers not both. The on board charger puts out 18 amps back into one set of batteries per hour. The purpose of the charger in it's present form is to be used primarily when you have time to build back up a charge into the batteries vs. powering the boat while underway. The boat will reach a speed of 2MPH on one motor using the generator. The coast guard does not certify the gen set installation. We have a fan blowing the exhaust out and the door can be left shut while running. The installation of this generator system is the least expensive way to offer an alternative method of charging should you need it. Of course there is no limit to the level of sophistication you could get using lithium batteries, AC brushless motor, and higher HP generator. We do not get enough interest in this kind of package because it extremely expensive. I understand your desire to increase run time on our boat but today I cannot offer a practical economic solution. We have thousands of customers who enjoy boating in our boats with the limited time they provide of 3 to six hours of full speed run times. A Honda four stroke outboard is the only practical way to increase run times.

Thank you for your interest.

On the other hand there may also be an opening on the port side for the waste heat and exhaust of the generator to exit. In which case I don't see any problems. Unfortuntely, there are no photos showing that area of the boat so I'm just guessing thats where the exhaust opening is.
