If anyone is interested, I put a short, low resolution video of the shaft brake on my Ericson 27/SolidNav in operation on youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TV5Xy1DDnLI
The cable is connected to the throttle lever at the helm. When the throttle is pulled back to power down the brake cable engages and stops the shaft. When the lever is pushed forward to add power the brake cable disengages. In this video I was just moving the throttle at the motor.
I did this for two reasons;
The early Sevcons that came with the SolidNav Explorers would not shift into reverse if you were moving forward faster than 2 knots or so. By stopping the rotation of the shaft the controller will allow the motor to reverse immediately.
The motor freewheels while sailing and can make some noise.
