[Electric Boats] Re: Electric motor for 33' Sailboat

While there are many difficulties in performing an unbiased comparison; availability of systems, suitable test platform(s) and cost in time and money to conduct the test, you can try to get real world data from converted boats that are similar to yours.

There's more to your requirements than the length of your boat, displacement, underbody configuration and the like. And horsepower rating isn't as relevant in electric propulsion systems, you may be better served by looking at Kw (volts X amps) ratings. I think that 5Kw and 6Kw systems should be sufficient for your boat (without knowing much about your boat).

The systems that you are looking at seem OK. None of the prices you listed appear to include the batteries, so you should keep that in mind too.

I suggest that you also look at Propulsion Marine in Santa Barbara

James has been successful at developing a very efficient system, backed up by real world measurements. His systems are very complete and he has the ability to tailor the components to match more specific requirements. My only involvement with Propulsion Marine is as a customer.
