And to Dennis . . . I completely forgot about needing to vary the speed . . . oops.

ANYWAY . . . the gist of my thoughts were toward simplicity.

SO, to my way of thinking the next-best step toward simplicity would be a 12-volt system.  But, worthwhile motors seem to operate at 24 volts and above.

A 48 volt system, to me, would complicate the charging and overall, 48 volts seem like a lot, even though, as a kid, I used to stick my finger in a light socket . . . often, just for kicks(to this day I can feel that, ohh . . . funny feeling).

Even a 24 volt system bothers me, because I can either buy 12 volt stuff or 120 volt stuff(everything else).   At 12 volts, as a battery gets toward the end of it's useful life, that same battery will work great for my LED lights, very small TV and such, and I don't need to pair out my batteries,  although I would eventually get all the same type/size batteries down the road and the charging should be much easier by either a 120 volt charger(at the dock), a generator or solar.

I'm 60 years old(none of my 3 older brothers made it to 60), and given my family history(they all died of completely different things), I work on a 2 or maybe 3-year plan . . . a rolling plan(I hope), as such that my planning is ALWAYS for another 2-3 years. So, if I live to be 62, my plans will go to 64-65.

BUT anyway, since I'm planning rather short-term, I don't want to get caught up in more complications than I need.

Not that I don't...just that I think even Compac would rather do the diesel because that is what they are used to. I think they tried another motor once and it didn't work. Just don't want to get burned.
