RE: [Electric Boats] solar canal rambling

Ned,

Further to Denny’s comments below, I have used and sold Delta-Q’s Qui-Q line of chargers for about five years and have the following observations to report:

They definitely provide the power and efficiency as claimed and in my opinion are the best in the market and at an affordable price compared to their competition.  They are efficient enough to not need a cooling fan, relying on cooling fins instead, but absolutely make sure that there is sufficient air flow to effect the cooling.  Any that I have seen mounted in an (tightly) enclosed area will ultimately fry, follow their installation instructions closely if you choose this route.

As long as the above is adhered to, the cooling fins serve the purpose very well and the charger will give yeoman’s service.  This charger is completely silent in operation and since there is no need for cooling air intake, they are very well-sealed, obviously an advantage in a saltwater or moist environment.  They are also light, can be programmed for optimal of charging algorithms for most battery configurations separately (e.g., 4 X 12 volts versus 8 X 6 volts), and are available from 24 volts to 60, although some voltages are special order.  They can also handle from 100 to 300 volts AC input, which adds to flexibility of the product.  In my opinion, the best option for most e-boats.

Coincidentally, my father and Delta Q’s founder’s father were long time (40+ year) business partners.  My comments here are not intended as business solicitation, I suggest talking to others before making a decision and purchase from a local dealer if interested.

Check out Delta-Q  chargers.  I believe they say they are >90% efficient.  No connection to me but I have used a couple of them.  Designed by a Canadian company but, sadly, made in China.
