Barney,

I would suggest you look at LiFePO4. The manufacturers claim a 2000 cycle life at 80% DOD. They do not exhibit the Peukert effect to any significant degree. A 260AH bank would have a functional capacity greater than your 400AH bank. The best prices I have found are from www.evcomponents.com. In addition to longer life, they will save considerable weight and space.
