Yes you need a regulator if you were to use an engine driven alternator. Without it you cannot control the voltage to your batteries. Many alternators do have regulators built in though.  For a simpler method

I would suggest you get a small generator then use it to power a battery charger. The battery chargers all have built in regulators.
