I already test sailed last year with an electric 2,5 kW inboard fed by 2 12V 130A AGM batteries. Fitted with a 3 blade 12" prop. At 60% hull speed the set needed +/- 800W - 1000W. The batteries allow a discharge to 20% and practically this meant I could sail for 1,5 - 3 hrs depending on conditions.
Since the inboard requires a big hole for the propellor (it's an S frame hull with the rudder mounted right at the back of the keel) we want to investigate the set up this discussion is all about. Since we want to put the boat on the market commercially we are looking for a labour and cost effective solution. We think mounting in the rudder is better for the boat and creates more flexibility after sales. Retractable is not an option.
The option I have over here is a Mastervolt 2,0 kW pod with folding propellor:
http://www.mastervolt.com/marine/products/podmaster/podmaster-21/
Cost: € 3.500,- = +/- $ 5.100,- (3 blade bronze prop)
Weight: 17 kg - 40 lbs
Length: 53 cm - 21"
Diameter: 12.5cm - 5"
The other option I found on the internet is the minn kota engine mount 160, as far as I can tell this offers around the same performance as the single pod mentioned above.
http://www.minnkotamotors.com/products/trolling_motors/engine_mount/saltwater.aspx
Still trying to find measurements, weigths and RPM.
Disadvantage is that it is a twin pod, and no folding prop available (at least as far as I know) thus creating more drag.
Both systems will be fed by 2 12V 220A AGM batteries.
I think we will have to try and test it in an actual set up... Any suggestion where to find a used 160EM minn kota for a nice price?
