I have heard that a any sustained event of a 3v cell being charged to an internal voltage of 4.2v or discharging to below 2.5 can ruin that cell. With 4 cells together, 12v nominal, those voltages play out at 16.8v or 9v with balanced cells. There are various types of BMS (battery management systems) available to protect the battery bank from these situations.
