Oorja has just announced a 4.5KW DMFC (methanol-powered fuel cell) that they are looking at marketing to the EV crowd. I've always felt this was the best "alternative" for boats - fresh water, heat, and an energy-dense, plant-derived fuel. This one is big enough to serve as the house genny and run a motor to boot. Plus we can re-install our old alcohol stoves! (grin)
Given that a marine genny is $10K+ they don't need to be "cheap" to be a valid option for those people who would be looking for one anyway.
