Ernie, I'm glad you appreciated my perspective. Give it a shot. What's the worse that can happen? You'll just have a lot of parts for another boat! :)
I'm going to guess that your best range will be at the speed your boat is just barely on plane. Plowing through the water below plane, but at high displacement speeds is probably going to be the worst. And, since a jet drive is very inefficient at very low displacement speeds, say 4-6 knots, that won't be good for range either. But, you won't know until you can log some data. Therefore, I suggest you design for minimum planing speed. If the boat still runs under IC power, then take her out and find what that speed is. It'll give you a target to design for.
If you need extreme range, I'd consider dropping an auxilarly unit over the transom like a Torqeedo powered by your batteries and then switching to back jet drive for planing only.
