Re: [Electric Boats] Searching the ideal electric propulsion system

Hi redu

Thank torqeedo for putting all kinds of articles covering their products into the net. I actually have this issue of Palstek at home (got it from a friend when he heard I was interested in electric repowering of my boat). In this same issue there is also a yacht described with twin-torqeedo 2.0 engines called "autark" which can be ordered in that configuration with windgens and solarpanels (not exactly cheap). I don't remember the make, but it was 29 feet long. A little googling braught the link of the whole article: http://www.palstek.de/wp-content/uploads/bootstests/arion29.pdf if anyone is interested... it's in german though.
Maybe this e-jet engine is not as efficient as the torqeedos, which I don't know. However, it lacks a transmission and the respective losses. According to advertisements the torqeedo is 51% efficient when looking at the overall usable power output. Most of the power is probably lost at the prop but some of it probably also in the gearing? Anyway, I just thought it was an idiot proof system with no mechanical wearing and supposedly efficient cooling. The other thing which strikes me when I watch their videos, they compared a torqeedo some engine of theirs and the torqeedo makes a lot of noise (at least on the video) and their own engine seems completely silent though a little less efficient with a top speed 0,3 knots lower compared to the torqeedo 2.0 ( Both with 2000 watt although they claim their engine is capable of 8 kw, video from the link on their homepage).
Well, I wrote them an email last week but didn't get an answer yet. Maybe that is also an answer. But the silence of this engine is very tempting... I'll keep on dreaming and sailing as much as possible to avoid hearing the Honda.
