[Electric Boats] Re: Searching the ideal electric propulsion system

Hi Perry,
thanks for the link to the other company. I wasn't aware of them yet but added them to my links now. I hope you are wrong about e-jet not starting production any time soon because then I might end up with a torqeedo. And in that case I want it to be fitted in an engine well with some kind of flaps, like Chris did for his much bigger trimaran. But that would be a lot of work since there is no engine well on my boat. An outboard at the transom is what I have now. Honda 10 hp and the biggest problem are big waves making it surface. 10 cm more for the xtra long shaft might make a difference but the effect of so much weight on a 2,4 ton sailboat is terrible not to talk about the looks of it (which is not that important).
I would love to install this e-jet system retractably inside the transom overhang of my boat as close as possible to the rudder. My boat is a norwegian built Smiling 28 from 1978. Probably noone here has ever heard about it or seen one, but it is designed by Jan Herman Linge and he is the guy who also designed boats like Soling and Yngling which are better known. The smiling looks pretty much like a grown up Soling.
Even though the tidal currents around Tromsø often exceed knops I don't think I need more than a 2kw propulsion. Since motoring against the current would eat up any sensible amount of battery capacity in a very short time I don't see any reason why I would need more power. Therefor this very small system displayed on e-jets homepage might actually be enough for me to get in and out of the harbour, to turn the boat into the wind and get me back when the wind dies away.
The reason why I don't want a pod-system any more (re-e-power, belmann, aquapod etc.)is that once I have a problem with it I have to haul my boat out, and here in Tromsø that equals 400 Euros for THE hauling and three days on the hard even for a small boat like mine. And I am sure of one thing. There are always problems with engines. In that respect I should keep my Honda... so far it has always been starting instantly and never stalled. Wasn't it for the fact that it was so loud and heavy, I would keep it. I guess it will take some time before electric systems will meet the same quality standards.
