You have to paint the pulley sprockets with a rust preventer. For the chain coupler your need to use some kind of rust preventing lubricant - the others here have given good suggestions - I used lithium grease.
But… I also found I had to place a plastic box to go around it and rotate with the shaft because otherwise the grease ended up everywhere. I used an outdoor electrical outlet box because it had perfectly sized knockouts on each end. It seals well and keeps the water out.
