Re: [electricboats] Thunderstruck Gear Reduction

Dan, whoops!  You're absolutely correct!  Thank you so much.  I was conflating a chain coupler (a form of flexible coupling) with the TS reduction gear.  Thanks for helping me understand the difference!

Neither u-joint nor spider couplers will handle thrust load, but I have two protections against thrust in the prop shaft. The first is an R*D flexible coupling which has limited protection (I hear) from thrust, plus the Velvet Drive 72C has a thrust bearing integrated into the transmission (according to the diagrams I have).  So I think/hope I'm good with the thrust issue. Basically, I'm leaving the entire setup (Motor -- reduction gear/transmission  --  thrust bearing -- coupler -- prop shaft) in place from the diesel engine with the exception of the motor, which I'm swapping to electric.  In my case, I'm using the transmission as the reduction gear.

But I'm still considering some type of flexible coupling between the motor and transmission, just to handle potential misalignment and to keep noise down.

I'll post an image/drawing of my plan sometime this weekend.

Thanks again, Dan!
