Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Albin Vega direct drive?

Reason for a thrust bearing:

I bought a electronic fish scale from Amazon ($25 ! ).  It has a digital readout and is good to 400 pounds.

At 3000 watt input to our Sevcon drive in our 10kW Thunderstruck kit, our boat was pulling on the fish scale attached to our dock with 180 pounds of force !!!

I graphed the curve and it was pretty linear, so even though I stopped at 3000 watts because I was afraid of people getting mad in the other boats in the slip, at 10,000 watts our boat would pull with over 500 pounds of force!   Since this force is all being done by the prop and every action has an equal and opposite reaction, the force on the bearing in the motor or in the reduction drive is also 500 pounds.   This is not even accounting for shock loads which could be higher.

I am not even sure the Thunderstruck bearings are up to it...I see a lot of grease coming out when I take the throttle to near max...I may have to take it apart to see what grade bearing they used.  Hope it was Swiss made.
