Hi I personally went for reduction after considering direct drive. Not being aware of the specifics of your boat, but the general advantages to consider for gear reduction are:
It lifts the motor and electrical components up higher in the bilge.
Electric motors supplied by Thunderstruck generally have bidirectional fans for cooling and the faster they spin the more air passing through for cooling. Props normally have lower rpm requirements than the motor optimum speed for cooling.
The above motors also can not sustain axial load, a thrust bearing is required between the motor and shaft.
If you use your existing prop you can adjust the final drive ratio with the selection of different size gears.
Disadvantages are the increased space required, weight and complexity of reduction.

Hi
I'm new to the forum and in hope for some advice. I have a 27 ft. Albin Vega that I'm about to convert to electric (Thunderstruck motors sailboat kit), but I'm wondering about to go direct drive or a gear reduction way? Have any of you any experience on converting an Albin Vega to EP and direct drive or gear reduction?
Thanks!
