[Electric Boats] Re: Albin Vega direct drive?

I am not sure why you are considering a direct drive system.  A well designed AC induction motor would provide a good direct drive solution at a cost with greater weight.
We build a direct drive PMAC systems for boat builders and would not recommend it for this boat and do not see a particular reason to want to do a direct drive for this boat.  Our Direct Drive system include thrust bearings and isolation components and we supply them for much lighter weight day sailors with space limitations.
The only unique nature of the boat is that the propeller is aft of the rudder (therefore a bit offset).  There is plenty of room in the motor compartment for a installation of an electric motor with the mechanical advantages of gearing.  That will give you the ability to match the propeller and the motor to effectively make a well put together system for this boat.  The motor can then reach rpm and match the propeller and the motor will run efficiently and cool and if done correctly give you years of reliable performance.  Why would you want to do it any other way?
