Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Direct Drive QS Hub Motors

You SHOULD be able to upgrade later by just swapping in the bigger motor. The ME1306 has the same mounting face and should have the same number of poles with the same 120 degree hall array, and a controller programmed for the 1305 ought to spin the 1306 without reconfiguring. If not, you can always have the vendor reconfig your controller while you wish that you had a Kelly controller that you could do yourself LOL. Only one hitch... full power of the bigger motor will depend largely on bank voltage. I have a ME0201014201 motor and also an ME0913 and I really didn't get much more power out of the bigger motor, since in both cases I was supplying the controller from 8  6v golf cart batteries in series. If I had doubled the size of the bank I would have seen the ME0913 jump up and work up a sweat, yeah. But I was feeding it with half its max rated voltage. So just sticking a bigger motor in there won't always make as much difference as you would think. You have to look at the motor ratings carefully. But I do believe that a motor rated for 5kw at 48v will, with a 48v bank, be more than adequate for the Nordic. Think of it as a 6HP outboard but in many respects, better. A boat that is pushed in a satisfactory manner by a 6HP outboard will do marvelously with a well engineered 5kw inboard system. Even my OEM Atomic 4 didn't push my boat any faster than my new 5kw motor. Oh and with more power available you would possibly want a bigger prop.

If you do ever upgrade the motor then the smaller one makes a great spare. Same with the controller, if you go bigger on that. Take it from me... a spare motor and controller are not a waste of space to keep tucked away somewhere on the boat. Just keep them dry, like in sealed in multiple layers of plastic dry.

Hi Eric
Yes I have seen the blog on Matthews electric Nordic 17 but to tell the truth I am still getting my head around electrical terminology. Matthews boat uses a Perm 132 and direct drive. My boat may have slightly less displacement than Matthews, but they are identical hulls.. The 5kW drive you are using in your Bermuda is that a Thunderstruck kit and if so what is the motor model. Does it power your boat adequately? My prop and shaft is currently at the Marine Engineers. They are scanning and polishing the propeller, straightening the shaft, fitting a new cutless bearing and shaft seal. I haven't got the propeller data back yet but verbally they have advised that the propeller is good quality and perfect for the boat. I provided the ME1305 motor data I had which was very little and verbally I was advised to go to at least 8Kw.  No big deal I could always go up to the 10kW kit but I suspect the 5kW kit would be fine as advised by the King. When I get the prop data back it will be easier to make an informed decision if the 5kW motor is OK.
