Sounds most interesting and just want the EP market needs. I especially like the idea of it also being able to operate in hybrid mode.  While my system has been working well for me for ten years now. Squeezing just a little more power from my Honda 2000 while electro sailing is my last goal. Keep us informed on your project.

I have been converting boats to electric for 15 years.  

I have had a lot of mentors along the way that have shared a lot of time with me, so I feel obligated to pass along what I have learned.

Its interesting how you study the details for a long time, then the whole picture emerges as one comprehensive solution that is integrated throughout..   

There really is no good charging solution on the market today for electric boats, so I am in the process of building a balancing charger to go along with the computer we built to manage batteries last year.    You will hear more about his in the coming weeks, but it will be able to toggle between 1.6 KW and 3 KW for different AC sources, have 300 watts of balancing currents, and be able to run in hybrid mode as a power supply.    It will also feature up to 1 amp of continuous balancing currents.    The brains is a computer we made from scratch with printed circuit board which measures voltage and temperature of every battery, then activates 16 relays which can be used for chargers, loads or diversion loads.    Its also internet friendly and can report over wifi and bluetooth.      We can make a version up to 4 KW.  This enables the use of AC generators, with the benefit of going to float when the batteries need it, based on charging currents.   

The system can measure up to 5 different currents using donut current sensors that do not require the wire to be broken like most shunts these days.  

We also have a 12 volt computer for the house which is capable of texting your cell phone when the bilge goes off, or turning circuits like the fridge or lights on before you get to the boat.  

The goal is a fully integrated electric boat with complete internet of things connectivity..    And its not that far away.

The final goal will be building our own designed electric boat from scratch.   We have the design, but still look for the boat builder!   

So there are some good things on the horizon coming soon.     

The prevailing message that I have though is "Safety First"    Most people don't like to talk about safety but when you use AC, then confine enormous amounts of electrical energy in batteries, being safe is a prudent thing to do.   It costs a bit more, but comes with the advantage of having lower overall cost of ownership because safely managed batteries last much longer than batteries that are forgotten about.    

For all of us pioneers in this field, keep up the good work.   Its going to pay off in the long run by having cleaner boats with nicer personalities than our diesel rivals!
