I converted my OMC saildrive seven years ago. A detailed account can be found here:

It's been awhile, but I believe the problem with retaining the existing saildrive leg was dealing with the water (cooling) intake. You remove the OMC engine and you open up the system, allowing water to infiltrate.
For this reason, I went with a Sillette drive leg paired with an Electric Yacht motor system. I'm not sure of any other options at this point, but five years ago, this seemed to be one of very few solutions.
