Re: [Electric Boats] battery issue

I would always double check the Paktrakr. It's a very good and handy measuring meter for EP boats. But, I have had to take into account various anomalies when using it. For example since the Paktrkr takes it's operating voltage off of the most "negative" battery in the bank that battery voltage is always lower than others in the bank sometimes by almost a volt when the bank is fully charged. Once in awhile I disconnect the Paktracker and charge the bank up and let it rest to make sure that the pack is in balance by measuring each battery with a digital voltmeter before hooking up the Paktraker again.
I also had a battery failing alarm when using the Paktrakr but, it appeared to be a loose connection on one of the Paktrker leads and has not returned.
As for the jumper heating up. Before I would condemn the battery I would check or replace the battery jumper. I look at them and their connections as the weak links in the battery bank. I would also probably remove and clean all the battery connections while you are at it. Let us know what you find.

My PakTrakr warned of a failing battery, battery #2. Under load of 40-50 amps #2 was running in the low 11 volts. I cleaned up the contacts (and found a loose connection between #2 and #3!!)and the alert went away. Then I ran the motor at 30 or so amps for five minutes and got an Alert on the #4 battery. The reading under load was again in the low 11 volts but on the #4 battery. The #2 battery is now right with the other batteries, in the upper 12 volt range. The jumper wire from #4 to #3 is getting warm while all the other jumpers are cool.

I'm preparing for a bad battery but curious about the migration of PakTrakr Alert.

Any thoughts?
