I've simply used silicone-lined heat shrink tubing. When you heat it,
the silicone inside melts and seals the connection; the tubing forces
the melted silicone into all the voids as it shrinks. I've cut apart a
connection that I made over 10 years ago, and it was clean and bright as
new. Costs pennies.
