Re: [Electric Boats] Electric Yacht system

Don,

I'm familiar with Electric Yachts and was wondering which of their systems that they recommended for your boat. I assume it was either the 100ib or the 130ib and that you'll be running 48v. I see that you're planning on using 4 group 27 batteries which should give you about 2.3 kWh usable storage. You may find that you get less than an hour at 50A before you're down to a 40% charge. The good news is that if you add another battery bank in parallel, your effective range more than doubles because each bank is getting hit with half the amps and batteries have more capacity at lower discharge rates.

My plan is to get my boat running with one bank and add another one after some of the kinks have been worked out. It also will give my wallet a chance to recover a little before the second round.

I'm looking forward to hearing about your actual results.

Re: [Electric Boats] Electric Yacht system

According to the Volvo Penta MD10A manual a 14 X 12 was one of the
options. Now I am not sure if the Ericson will accommodate the 14 inch
or not. Perhaps an assumption on my part. I guess a splash in the water
with a measuring tape will solve the riddle. I will forward this to
Scott who is programming the controller. It is a brushed motor. I
ordered a set of extra brushes with the hope of never having to install
them, along with an extra belt. The Dual Pro 4 Bank Pro SE is the
charger.

I am curious as to why 2 four banks of batteries ? I will have four
Interstate SRM 27 cell batteries hopefully installed by week's end,
pending the arrival of the motor assembly and switches, etc.

I choose the brushed motor over the brushless because of the possible
failure of the controller. It is my understanding that a direct battery
connection to a brushed motor will allow a safe journey back to slip. I
am now contemplating the replacement of the 50 amp fuse with a 50 or 100
amp circuit breaker. This would be more for convenience of not having to
look where I put the extra fuse.

Eric,

Are you sure you can fit a 14x12 prop on your E27? I ended up with a
12x10 three blade fixed and it works pretty well - 4knts @20amps. I would
like to try a 12x11 just for grins.

Is the Electric Yacht motor a brushless motor? When I was looking they
were brushed motors. The SoildNav Explorer, the one I installed in my
Ericson 27 is brushless.

Also if you are adding new batteries to older ones I would get a charger
that charges each battery individually. Like the Dual Pro Four Bank Pro
SE. I added a new battery to a bank after one went bad and the Kipoint 48
volt charger (which charges the whole bank as one) had problems. The Four
Bank Pro is keeping the mixed bank balanced so far.

I have two separate banks; 4 group 27 AGM's and 4 group 31 AGM's. The
Kipoint charger is on the bank that has all the same vintage batteries
and it's working fine on them.

[Electric Boats] newbie

My first day on this forum. My name is Larry Gwynn. I live on an island off the coast of Georgia. My desire is to built something like a Redwing 18 electric boat so that I can ply the waters of the Altamaha River and its Sound.  I'm retired so have plenty of time to get in trouble. Don't have enough knowledge to ask intelligent questions so I'll go into lurk mode for a while. Thanks.

Re: [Electric Boats] and now for something completely different

Look at #29 Fall copy of Epoxyworks. They show electric motor driven
Flettner Rotors on a trimaran. Admittedly you still need some wind for
them to work, but its another way to propel a boat using electricity.

Re: [Electric Boats] Electric Yacht system

Eric,

Look up electricyacht.com. The site will give you a breakdown of the
system, motor, controller, switch, fuse, etc. I will be hooking it up
to four wet cell batteries, because I already had two and just adding two
additional. I am also in the process of replacing all interior/exterior
lighting with LEDs to reduce the draw on house electrical needs.

I am also awaiting the delivery of a three blade 14 X 12 prop. I have
looked at all the other systems, which include chain drive versus belt
drive, as well as a gearbox versus belt drive, and settled on Scott's
assembled belt drive package. He is pleasant to deal with and has the
electrical background to put it all together, and a thousand dollars
under the Solidnav unit. If you have any further questions, please do not
hesitate to call.

[Electric Boats] Re: Problems with the Marine EV industry

There was an article recently that noted that the primary sources for
Lithium are Chile and Bolivia (who hate each other) and China and
Russia. What's going to happen when the demand heats up? Another war
between Chile and Bolivia, with China and Russia on the sidelines
raising prices?

I have cleared out my old Volvo Penta MD10A gas engine and preparing for
the arrival of a system from Scott as well. Scandalous, an Ericson 27
will be powered by electric propulsion in San Diego hopefully within a
month.
