Re:[Electric Boats] New to this electric inboard motor stuff - anyone if Dallas/Fort Worth done a DYI?

I used to live in DFW, and had my first boat on Lake Texoma. Now living in Los Angeles.

I have a 1976 Islander I-28, which is very similar to your Hunter in LWL and weight. I installed the 10kw Thunderstruck motor, 3:1 gear reduction, and Clearview Display, along with 8x Trojan T-105 batteries a year ago and couldn't be happier. It replaced the seized up Volvo.

The only issue was my propshaft was 3/4in with a non-standard 1/4in keyway. The 1in to 3/4in coupler that.came with the kit had the standard 1/8in keyway for the 3/4in side of coupler. I had some 1/4in key stock milled on one side to 1/8in and works perfectly. This is not a issue with the kit, just make sure you measure your keyway as well as shaft diameter and let Thunderstruck know. I didn't specify keyway size when ordering.

Otherwise install was pretty straight forward and have had no issues. Furthest we have motored so far has been about 16miles at 3.5knots. The majority of the time we return to the dock with +90% battery remaining. Motor is super quiet and we would do it again in a heartbeat.

Hi  friends:

We are looking to convert from our 1980, 8 hp, Renault Diesel motor to electric power using the Thunderstruck Sailboat kit 10.5 kw.

We own a 1980, 27ft Hunter, 7000# displacement. It's an adorable old gal.

I'm all on board with the change but my husband could use a little more convincing.....

Any advice would be wonderful.  I'd love to see or hear your story and best learned lessons.  We are in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area and our boat is on Grapevine lake.

Thanks, Theresa & Jay
