Hi Mike,

Thanks for the info.    What are your thoughts on using the Honda 2000 charging the bank while the boat is underway, and drawing power?

Your points on the exhaust and heat are noted and well advised.

[Electric Boats] Re: Hybrid w/Honda 2000

At least half of our 400 clients use a Honda 2000i or like system.  With a 48v 25a charger you will be able to drive up to 1200w into the battery bank or motor. Most have indicated that they get between 3 and 3.5hr on a full load of fuel.  You have to let the genset reach power before applying the charger load.  We recommend that the charger have a dedicated circuit on the ac panel and the genset be connected to the dock power connection so that you can switch the charger on after the genset is running.

The fuel tank is above the combustion chamber and the exhaust is not taken off the boat so that you must run the genset on the deck and make sure that fumes are taken off the boat.  Take precautions and do not refuel the genset when running or when hot. If the charger has heat management it may reduce that level of power.

If you convert the genset to propane, you will lose about 10%.

RE: [Electric Boats] Hybrid w/Honda 2000

Yeah quiet and also very light, compact, easily stored and carried. I may get one myself some day. I think it would carry my smart charger load okay, but if not, I can always charge manually with my variac/rectifier setup, and keep bulk phase charging current just under the generator breaker trip point.

RE: [Electric Boats] Hybrid w/Honda 2000

I stand corrected! After reading this I went back and checked the input on my charger (14 amps) and the rated output of a Honda EU 2000( 16.7 amps). So yes, I could use that unit. Which is nice because they are so quiet. So I apologize for the confusion, but thanks for making me double check!

RE: [Electric Boats] Hybrid w/Honda 2000

When last I had my EU2000i onboard and at maximum output, I was able to run continuously, all day long driving 2 chargers delivering 20amps each into 36v---i.e. about 1440watts of charging.

Hi,

I am looking at a thunderstruck 5kW kit and adding on a Honda 2000 generator to increase range for times when the wind is gone (like up here in the PNW in the summer!).

My boat is a 6000# wooden sailboat with an LOA of 25, and an LWL of about 21-22ft.

What are peoples' experiences with such a setup.   What is their resulting cruising speed

when they are running on the generator for an extended time?    Strictly from calculations I am estimating I could run at about 2.3 kts.   Does this sound right?

Any advice, experience, good stories, etc. are appreciated!

regards, peter

Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Hybrid w/Honda 2000

I have to concur, you should be able to push your boat pretty good with an EU2000. It really doesn't take much power to get that first few knots. I can push the Arc, a 45 foot, 20 ton conversion at 2 mph on 20 amps, which at 48V is about 1 kW. Now keep in mind this is in CALM conditions and pushing against any kind of weather will change the equations significantly but I've also had occasion to plow into some fairly heavy weather at relatively low amperages and still make way. Although if your bucking a 3 knot current, it can become a lost cause so keep your tides in mind.

Funny story:

On our recent passage to Lake Santee in South Carolina we were passing through the lock at the dam. It's an 80 foot lift and somewhat dramatic as you rise in the boiling cauldron to the lake level. Well when we got to the top and the lock doors opened I engaged the drive to exit, nothing happened. I quickly checked the engine room and the driveline was spinning away but the boat wasn't moving. A look at the stern confirmed there was no rotor wash. Holy crap, our prop  must had fallen off the boat in the lock.

So here we are in the lock with no prop, dead in the water. In total desperation I hip tied our little dinghy with a 55# thrust Minnkota trolling motor on it and set it at full throttle. To my utter amazement the Arc began to move forward and pushed us out of the lock. Once out of the lock we were able to make a full 1 mph. Thankfully it was pretty calm or this probably would not have worked but we did have a mild headwind so it was definitely the Minnkota doing the job. There was a little cove about a mile away and we were able to creep over to it in about an hour, drop the anchor and install my extra prop.

So it really does only takes an amazingly small amount of power to push pretty big boats slowly.

I can move my 16,000 lb 30 foot boat at 3 knots with just my NG-1 battery charger with no problem. I'm not even maxing out the power output of the Honda to do it. You should have no problem with your boat using the Honda 2000 and appropriate battery charger/power supply. I have found that I use the Honda more for battery charging at anchor than for hybrid operation. In nine years only once did I actually use it for a 40 mile stretch on a windless day and it worked well. I chronicle it here: ELECTRO SAILING AROUND NEW YORK: PART ONE
