It would be the first Mac19 electric conversion I have heard of. Not ideal, but few boats are. If you already own it, then go for it. If you are looking at boats figuring on jumping into the electric club, Well, I'm not getting the fuzzy feeling about it. But those are outboard powered, right? A pair of Minn Kota 36v trolling motors would be pretty cool. You want one right hand and one left hand... I don't know if they make them reversible and with both props available. You don't want 2 right hand props or 2 left hand props. The boat will crab going ahead on a course. And you will be cheating yourself out of the incredible maneuverability available to multiscrew boats.
but back to more realistic stuff... a dead outboard can make a dandy electric kicker. Don't forget to remove the water pump impellor. It is uneccessary drag on the motor. 3hp? Why not just get a 5kw or so motor, have a good 6.whatevah hp? Im thinking 4 group 31 batts for 48v and about what... 105 amp hours? Of course with flooded lead acid, you shouldn't discharge much deeper than 50% so call it 50ah of usable juice. Generally you will only use about 1/4 power but you will have plenty of reserve if you need it. Like for showing off heheheh. I assume you will still be sailing the boat and electric will be merely an auxilliary? If so, that will be plenty of battery for you I think. And it won't cost an arm and a leg. There are better batteries to be sure, but they cost more. Since you are talking about a very inexpensive little boat, I assume you are hoping to go pretty cheap.
For a small inboard I HIGHLY recommend a BLDC motor, but for an outboard a brushed motor might be okay, and the controller will be way cheaper. Salvaged golf cart or forklift components might do the trick on a budget. Me, I really like the Motenergy brushless motors and simply by preference I myself would probably go with an ME0907. Or since I have 2 laying around, an ME0201014201. Both are 5kw motors and run nicely from a Kelly 48v 300a controller. The 0907 is a bit faster and so it might work better as an outboard than the 4201.
