Each of us have our own personal way we use our boats and I am not maintaining ours is right and another's is not right. Our criteria/priority in re-powering: propeller, motor, battery. The right propeller to drive the boat efficiently with an electric motor. The motor that will get the boat to hull speed for a sustained time and drive the boat at cruising speed with ease. A battery bank that addresses the needs of the boat with the idea of future replacement.
We completed a conversion of an Alberg 30 here in California recently. The client has spent two years bringing this boat back to like new condition. The boat had a Gary Marine gas motor which I believe was about 20hp and the displacement was listed at about 9000 pounds. The client originally traded a small diesel for a SolidNav system that we calculated at about 4.5kW. We felt the prop was not adequate and motor too small.
We installed a 10.0kW motor and geared it to drive a 3 blade 13X10 propeller (not sure of the reduction). A 48v 225AH flooded battery bank was installed with the idea that it would be replaced in several years with a new technology. The new system weight equaled the old gas system's weights. The boat can reach hull speed and has a range of about 12NM at 4kts at 60% DOD. As an aside, the client turned down a substantial cash offer for the boat this last weekend at the boat show.
There is a significant difference in steering this boat with its full keel and rudder hung off the keel. The boat was not designed to go in reverse as it is a real challenge. You have to get the boat moving to have even the least bit of control from the helm.
