Hi Erik,
You might want to consider a belt drive. It's much easier to match the motor to the prop, which is critical to getting good performance. They are also much quieter than gearboxes, and can provide electrical isolation between the motor and shaft.
It's pretty straight-forward to build up a motor mount to which you can bolt some store-bought mounted bearing assemblies to handle the thrust and side loads. There will be a lot of other details to work out of course, but that's half the fun in my book. In the end you probably won't save a ton of money vs. buying an off-the-shelf system like the ones my brother Scott at Electric Yacht sells, but if you prefer to "roll your own" I say go for it. It can be a lot of fun, and you'll get plenty of advise here.
A 48V, 5KW motor and eight 6V golf cart batteries should give you the performance you are looking for, and then some.
Good luck, and please keep us posted!
Cheers,
Jim McMillan
