Re: [Electric Boats] Cooling motors

Eric,

would really like to avoid brushed motors if at all possible but i do understand about the need for the controller to understand the position of the other types of motors and that of course would mean that separate controllers would be necessary....  i HAVE read about some sort of controller that has a secondary set of circuits that does allow for simultaneous balancing of a second motor but haven't followed up on it at all...

do you know if there exists a device that would balance the output of two motors by simultaneously adjusting two separate controllers....  seems that it wouldn't be too difficult to design or build but i don't know what such a device would be called....

Hi Mike,

Since your ASMO system uses a brushed DC motor, the controller doesn't need any feedback from the motor like the brushless motors, BLDC, PMAC or ACIM. Brushed motors mechanically control the current to the appropriate windings.

If the motor only has big power cables attached to it, then the controller needs no feedback. If there are a couple of small wires running between the motor and the controller too, those handle the positioning info that the controller needs to run the motor.

My system has worked so well for me that I hardly even give it much thought let alone tinker with it much. I'm a if it ain't broke don't fix it kind of guy. As far as I know on my system there is no feedback between the motor and the controller other than my hand on the throttle.;) Don't know about other systems.
