[Electric Boats] a seemingly ideal approach

The system that I like most so far uses a auto starting DC generator to charge a battery bank whenever the voltage in the bank falls to specified point.  The battery pack is then routed to the electric propulsion system, a DC-DC converter to a get 12v volt supply and a good size inverter that supplies AC power to the boat.  When the voltage in the battery bank reaches a specified upper limit the generator shuts itself off.  One can watch the level of battery charge and  modify ones usage as one sees fit but the system takes care of itself in terms of keeping the power available.  Seems pretty simple and effective.  Can anyone foresee any problems with such a system?
