[Electric Boats] Re: Harmony's Electric Propulsion System???

Just a few things that I gleaned out of the two videos. Harmony is a serial diesel/electric hybrid with no traction batteries. No silent running, no regen. Given the configuration, I don't know if there is any overall efficiency increase over running the two small diesel engines directly into the prop shafts, there might be some improvement but it should not be significant. I think that there might be more efficient ways to execute this type of system.

The drive motors only work off of the generators. The generators must be producing 240VAC before the electric motors will turn. The electric motors appear to be typical industrial AC induction motors. I don't know if the generators have integrated throttling that adjusts the diesel engine speed to the demand.

Since the batteries are for the house load only, they operate just like any cruising boat's house bank. The solar panels and wind generators are for house loads only.

Other than collecting small amounts of renewable energy for the house bank (not much more than many other cruisers) I don't see that they are significantly less reliant on fossil fuels than they were with diesel engines alone. I centainly wouldn't consider Harmony to be "environmentally friendly".
