RE: [Electric Boats] Re: New numbers - I would love your input - I will upload the excell file next

AmeP has been including a Cycle Analyst (website below) which shows power used, as well as real-time consumption, including kW rate. The CA also has a Hall sensor input, and a scaling factor to allow for the motor speed to be displayed. The Cycle Analyst comes in two size formats, a pre-packaged unit suitable for bicycle use with a small display, and a component version featuring a large format screen. Use a Budd box with a clear cover from Allied to mount the component version for a robust battery monitor you can stow when sailing. Keeping the display inside when not in use (about 99% of the time) will extend its life tremendously.

Sevcon makes a very nice display unit available with both Electric Yacht and Propulsion Marine systems. Motor and controller temps, as well as programming features are also included. Should AMeP incorporate a CANbus data line, I'd use the Sevcon displays in a heartbeat. For our current systems, and the majority of home-built installs, the Cycle Analyst does a adequate job.

http://www.ebikes.ca/drainbrain.shtml is the home page for Cycle Analyst. (Drain Brain was the old moniker).

In some 8 years now I probably have rarely looked at the Time Remaining display on my Link10 as I find I know the battery's state well enough by tracking the AmpHours removed and knowing what the state of the pack has been when fully charged.  With these old tired batteries I know I can't pull more than 100ah or so out of them despite their being rated higher.  So unless I go into the Link10 and change the pack capacity number to what I think this pack has now, any remaining capacity or time to depletion estimate is meaningless.  Capacity Used and voltage under load are useful for me.

Just another opinion…
