Re: [electricboats] Electric Motor for 40' Sailboat

BTW I watched some Sailing Uma videos on e drives. They did have a fork lift motor initially but it was a fizzer. Overheated too quickly.

What ever motor you have you really need water cooling at this power level. Ditto for the speed controller.

Whether you need school water continuously or if a water radiator system was fine I do not know. Easiest might be a heat exchanger with one side suitable for salt water. You should be monitoring water temperature at least. Monitoring flow through the salt water side would be advantageous to detect the in editable blocks and slower reductions in flow.

Good suggestion, Kevin. I believe it was a forklift motor.

You might want to visit sailing Uma.  It is a YouTube channel. They started with a golf cart motor.

Hi everyone,

I am restoring a C&C 40' sailboat on a budget, and I am planning on replacing the engine with an electric motor. I know some of the general specifications I would like, including Brushless DC, 48V, and 12 kW. Does anyone have experience or advice on repurposing motors from golf carts, forklifts, or other similar vehicles? I have briefly searched eBay and online motor catalogs.

Any insight would be much appreciated.
