I read in nigel calder's boat owner mechanical and electrical book that you can install a permanant magnet dc generator directly into the bank and it's super effeciant because you can run the deisel generator at peak effeciancy. In the same chapter there are really good graphs too that explain what you can get away with building a seriel hybrid.

I have worked through the plans a few times and think we are going hybrid with a diesel genset. My struggle has been the available motoring time vs battery bank size. I want to figure out the best balance to allow for maximum Electric propulsion before switching to generator vs weight of batteries. We will be living aboard full time and traveling across Panama and south Pacific within a couple years.
I may pick your brain again.
