That's where it was detected, in a 1960's satellite that repeatedly
charged and discharged a NiCd cell to exactly the same levels. I've
never heard of it being an actual issue anywhere else. I've always
felt it was pretty much a non-issue, even in NiCds, and have never
understood the hysteria about it.

Of course, "big oil" has always worked hard to magnify every little
quirk of any battery so that people won't start doing things with
electricity instead of petroleum. I think they pay people to keep
feeding out such tidbits that would otherwise have been forgotten
long since (if you keep hearing it, you start believing that it must
be true and that people must think it's significant. Nobody's being
paid to argue against it.) - note what they did creating "Citizens
Against Car Charging Stations" in Califonia as revealed in "Who
Killed the Electric Car?". Everyone thinks nickel-iron batteries must
be crap because their admitted problems are totally blown out of
proportion -- but they work reliably for decades. And they've
certainly steered everyone away from wanting Ovshinsky's big flooded
NiMH cells which they also suppressed via patent control before they
could hit the shelves at Wallmart et al. And many people who sell
lead-acid batteries, even at the retail level (and there are a lot of
them!) help pooh-pooh other battery types as well. They're bad for
repeat business.

But the internet is now countering and disspelling the untruths and
"twisted truths" spread by corrupt vested interests. When the
financial system collapses, as it looks like it must soon do, I think
this kind of corrupt control partly by twisting of public perceptions
will probably have had its day.
