I'm currently building saildrive motors, and have not visited the Skipjack. When the current units are on the shelf for sale next week, I'll run the numbers. I'm considering plugging the hole left by the motor removal, and capping the open outdrive, and doing a pull test to determine loading sans wind. As the boat is not a displacement hull, but rather a planing deep-V, I expect the drag numbers to indacte a reasonable range at only 4 to 5 mph. If I do choose the 7.5 kWAC motor at 72v, I'll be running it at 30% output for the vast majority of the time. Sizing the electric to just move the boat along at full throttle would lead to a 3 or 4 kW motor, but contribute little to planing the boat when the ICE is spun up. I know that two 170hp motors, propped with 14.5"x17" counter rotating three blade prop had just enough power at that part of the curve to give the boat a reasonable hole shot. By changing the props to 12" pitch, I hope that the one remaing ICE
will have adequate torque at twice the speed. The boat planes at 12 to 15 mph, so it should just level out at full throttle. Will the electric help? The Styer units add 7kW for the 48v model, which seems reasonable. More news after next week.

Subject: Re: [Electric Boats] Any larger electric boat owners out there?
Arby, How are you doing with your skipjack? I am looking at a twin engine 38' Marine Trader with only one good engine! is it feasible to install an electric and motor effectively with one diesel and one electric? Does any know if this has been done before? What about removing both engines and powering the electrics with the diesel genset? Is this less efficient then straight diesel motoring? This is a very heavy boat and will do about 8knts cruise speed with the diesels consuming 3-4 gallons of f/hr
