Thanks for the background information about the LiFePO4 batteries. The story of people recently selling old stock that had been acquired when prices were lower is consistent with my observation that the prices and availability on Amazon change quickly. Right now, the lowest price I found for 12V (nominal) 6Ah claim is $26, shipping included.
However, the one battery I busted open (branded "LUV") contains cells marked "IFR 32700 6300 mAh 3.2V 2021/05/15" So they're not all old stock. Or, I suppose someone may have programmed the marking machine to print a date a few years into the future onto the cells.
Still, with this level of supply variability, whatever the reason, one cannot depend on Amazon vendors for a business with an ongoing need for these batteries. They're a good source when the price happens to be low. And one has to buy for the entire project at once, because if you buy a couple just to verify the quality, there might not be any left if the quality turns out to be acceptable and you want to buy more.
The "KUBOKA" branded batteries I bought appear identical to the "LUV"s on the outside except for the label, but I haven't busted one open to check the cells and BMS. I've also purchased some "Miady" branded batteries with different enclosures. All of these batteries have met expectations for capacity and none of them have lost appreciable amounts of charge in months of sitting around waiting for me to put them into service. So, the BMSs on these batteries don't seem to be the leaky ones.
Cheers,
Halden
