[Electric Boats] Thanks for add

Just got added looking around to see what people are using. I just picked up a 1977 Newport Mkii 30' that he been repowered to electric.

It has 8 6v US 125 XC2 batteries, tripplite 120-48v charger inverter, a nonbranded motor controller and a UK made LEM motor(5kw). Boat displaces 8000lbs, think motor is a lil undersized.

Boat sat a number of years ago with float charge going. Found 4 batteries with plates exposed. Still working to try and figure out if their ok or just ballast.

[Electric Boats] Connecting a TSM2500 Charger to Batrium BMS

I need help from a CANBUS expert. I have a CAN enabled TSM2500 charger supplied by Thunderstruck, it  is controlled by a serial port Electric  Vehicle Charge Controler. The EVCC  is used to set charge parameters and saved in the non-volatile memory.  My intention is to connect the TSM2500 charger direct to a Batrium BMS via the CANBUS connections. I do not need JI772 functionality as it is a boat and will be charged by a 240 volt 15amp shore power supply. Removing the on-board EVCC will simplify my installation. I have the Batrium BMS Starter Kit: Watchmon4 + 16 BlockMon M8 + SoC% sensor

See Batrium link below:

https://www.batrium.com/collections/starter-kit/products/starter-kit-watchmon-16s-blockmon-m8-shuntmon2-500a

What changes do I need to do to the TSM2500 to allow it to integrate will the Batrium BMS?  I have EVCC running with the serial port utilities connected. I only thing I have done to date is set maxv, maxc, termc and termt.  On the Batrium website they have the same charger as a TSM2500 although they reference it as an Enpower.  The instructions are vague and I am hesitant to attempt the connection until I have more information. For instance do you have the charger output to the battery bank and 240volt input connected during commissioning?

See Enpower Connection link below:

https://www.batrium.com/pages/how-to-control-a-enpower-charger-with-a-watchmon

Can anybody advise me how they went about setting up their charger. The Batrium BMS is connected and functioning with no problems at all on my 240AH 16S 48volt Himax LiFePO4 battery bank.

Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Sailboat Props - Data Please

Hi Tom Yes my project is still to be launched. I started with a 17ft half cabin displacement launch powered by a 10hp Bukh. I gutted it back to the bare hull and fitted a battery box in the keel for the LiFePO4 240AH battery pack . It is a complete refit basically. My target hull speed is 5.2 knots. Interestingly when I used the Vic Prop calculator it specified a three blade 15.8 x 12.5 prop compared to the 13.5 x 12.9 original prop . My marine engineer who scanned the prop made the comment that nine times out of ten when people order props using supplier calculators they ended up with the wrong pitch or number of blades to suit their needs. A 15.8 x 12.5 prop is to big in diameter to fit my hull. The smaller diameter prop has more pitch and hopefully I can get the prop shaft rpm optimized to get the best efficiency to achieve close to hull speed. I have a magnetelectric sensor fitted to the motor face plate at the large 72 toothed gear to register prop shaft RPM via a digital tachometer at the helm.. The Sevcon clearview display has motor RPM on it. My intention during the trails is to record boat  speed, motor RPM, prop shaft RPM and amps. It will be interesting to see how the boat performs on my set up as fitted. All my electrical and mechanical components have been bench tested OK and ready to fit apart from the charger and BMS. I cannot get the charger talking to the BMS via CanBus. This may be the subject of a new post for assistance with CanBus!

I have not converted to electric yet, but I can comment on the outboard. We had a E27 and the atomic was in bad shape so we added an outboard.. We had a honda 9.9 long shaft with a standard prop and we could do over 6 knots in calm conditions and could punch into a pretty good chop, but with big seas you have to watch out for cavitation.

The outboard/electric option sounds like an interesting combo that would provide flexibility.

Good luck!

[Electric Boats] Re: Sailboat Props - Data Please

Richard,

Thanks so much for the feedback!  I found the Alberg 30 on 'sailboatdata.com' and see that, like the Tartan 27-2 mentioned in another post, your boat is a pretty good comparable to my CD27, particularly since they were designed by the same architect!  Although, like the Tartan, your boat has a bit longer LWL.  Your Alberg also has a bit deeper draft and ~1,500 # more displacement, so I wouldn't expect to do worse with a similar setup.

Thunderstruck recommends their 10Kw motor for over 6,000# D, but I've been thinking that the smaller one, at 5Kw, might do just fine if my desired top speed is only ~4.0 to 4.5 knots.
Your experience seems to support that view.
Given that drag increases geometrically, I don't see how one could get a reasonably useful run-time out of 100 or so Amp Hrs. of capacity at speeds higher than 3 to 4 knots.

With 3:1 reduction ratio, is it correct to surmise that your shaft/prop speed must be in the 900 to 1,100 RPM range?
