Re: [Electric Boats] 37ft Sailboat Re-power Project

with peak currents from 4 to 8 knots, forcing deception pass in a displacement sailboat is a endeavor in slow torture.  I would recommend that you consider your current actions and consider how they could or should change when in a differently-powered boat.  e.g. right now you can just kinda go and have enough range to do whatever suits ya… but that will not be the case under electric power, so a paradigm shift in thinking and planning might be enough to make it more effective than anticipated..

I considered 72V system (12kW kit) to ensure adequate power and 72V to reduce lines losses, but for safety I like 48V.  Also, at 48V, off-the-shelf equipment are more available such as battery switches.

The power issue between 72V and 48V remains a concern (getting through Deception Pass comes to mind).  I may just install the 12kW kit so that I can be ready to increase the unumber of cells to get to 72V if I determine later that I need the higher power.  There is room available for the extra cells if needed.
