I have used a few treadmill motors on my boat.
It is a trial and error kind of thing.
I was also using nimh batteries.
I tried switching in for speeds 12,24,36,48. But the NIMH put out too many amps and arced when switched and fried the brushes or something in the motor.
I also tried a relatively small 50amp 48 |Volt DC controller.
This worked well, but had limited speed 3.5 KM/h .
I also found if |I pushed it much past 15 amps continuous, the motor heated up a lot.
I haven't found any controller at low amps at the higher voltages.
I feel if you could find a controller at 120V DC and 15 amps max, that these would be a good motor.
You can usually get them for free(people throw out their treadmills Craigslist free)
It would be easy to have a spare onboard as well(no cost)
If you have experience in building a motor controller, \I would be interested in helping design and test one for these motors.
Also there is a wide range of quality in treadmill motor. Some actually come rated at 3hp continuous.
