To continue into even greater extremes, there are SWATH hulls that do not plane but have very shallow power to speed curves at speeds multiple times greater than the 1.34 x waterline length squared figure. A bulbous bow can also help a full displacement hull perform well near, at, or even slightly in excess of theoretical hull speed. Hull speed is just a handy figure that does apply closely to what we regard as typical displacement hulls of conventional proportions. We know more or less what to expect from for instance an electric auxillary sailboat motoring at 1/3 hull speed vs 90% or 100% hull speed in terms of efficiency, from examining empirical data from other similar type vessels even of much larger or smaller size.
