the shading problem is solved by using 18 panels in series with the pattern spread across the roof of the boat so that at least half is in sun at any position of the main. presto 144 volt.plus.

Interesting idea. The Enphase micro inverters are around 96% efficient. Going the micro inverter router would also clear up any single panel shading issues. I wonder what the overall efficiency loss is for:
panel-> micro inverter-> battery charger-> lithium
vs
panel-> MPPT-> DC/DC converter (~48v->144v+)-> lithium.
