I'm looking at using a ZF 5 marine gearbox on a new 2-5Kw BLDC motor in my 25' yacht shaft drive. I agree that a proper gearbox should be better than a belt drive as it already has the required thrust bearings and retrofit may be more acceptable as many users could just remove their stinky deisel and with a suitable adapter plate/box, motor and controller, be on the water again in a reasonable timeframe.
Interested in your gearbox though - I'd have thought one ratio would be fine with electric motors flat power curves.
Did you find your Vetus noisy - one I know of squealed from belt or bearing area?
Cheers Colin from Oz
