There was a UK built device for long distance yachts which used a
generator attached to the stern of the yacht. The generator shaft
had a long line attached to it with a towed propellor which was
optimised for charging. They did not generate huge amounts of power,
but the concept was good and could be extended to provide seriously
useful power if the propellor is designed appropriately.
