I like your trap door Honda.  That’s clever.

I’m considering mounting the trolling motors on a rudder.  I’m curious if the additional directional imperative of a rudder would help out at all.  I’m also curious if there’d be any value to having both motors on a single axis.  Who knows, there might be a name for this, I’m not an engineer.

Glenn, what kind of keel or skeg did you install on your redwing?  I installed a roughly 3 inch tall keel the length of the hull and I skipped the aft skegs.  It turns nicely with the outboard, maybe a bit slow to respond, but I don‘t have alot to compare it to.

Regarding the Caroute N300, I purchased a Caroute 12 volt  electronically commutated motor (ECM) for $690 (ECM) 55# and tested it against a stock brushed 55# Minn-Kota Endura Maxx 12v ($279) on a 17' Square Stern Alumacraft canoe. I used an in-line amp/volt meer with 100 Amp Shunt for power measurements and iPhone GPS for speed.

The Caroute was less efficient (By about 30%) in terms of power consumption than the Minn-Kota using the same props on both motors after about a dozen 1 mile test runs with each motor on calm water.

The  Caroute ECM Control Board had a disturbing "stutter" that would cause the motor to "miss" periodically. 

When I discussed this with the Manufacturer's techs in China, they admitted that was a behavior of the unit (It wasn't a one off deal)

So, for the extra cost, no additional power savings and the uneven power, my next two trolling motor purchases were from Minn-Kota (Endura Maxx PWM Controllers  preferred over the Endrua C2 Step Switch Controllers)

Glenn, how did you rig up your steering?  I of course also have remote steering, a standard mechanical setup.  And I'm curious about the challenges with turning left under the dual setup.  Are dual ICE outboards set up with reversed props?  

Also, Glenn, I like how compact your motorwell area is.  I built the standard Redwing and I could use the extra foot of cockpit!

Yes on the motor well.  One reason I "redesigned" was all the space back there.  My set up is with Standard Teleflex steering.  I fabed up an arm between the two motors.  Yes, a lot of duel OBs have counter-rotating systems.  Most duel inboards do.  When I tested with 2 RH props, it took 3X longer to do a 360 to the left (or right) I forget.  In the video you see, I'm using the left hand prop on the left motor.  I have not gotten the thing balanced yet so...not quite there, 

BTW, I have a Honda 2 as an aux, that drops into a well under a center rear seat.  A sort of "trap door" through the bottom.  Works good.  The 2hp. Honda pushes about 5.5 mph.

For an 18 ft boat I would get 80 lbs of thrust or and make sore you have the amp hours you need
