Doesn't even have to be a 5k pot. Any linear 5k pot will work just fine, for most any controller, and a 1k or 10k pot seems to work fine at least for Kelly controllers. All the pot is doing is taking a throttle supply voltage of typically 5v, and tapping it somewhere between 0 and 5v for the throttle input signal. There are linear taper pots, and audio taper pots. An audio taper pot will be very insensitive to a certain amount of turn at one end of its adjustment, and very sensitive at the other end. So it will work but be very fiddly. Your controller throttle circuit MIGHT work differently from that, so at your own risk and all that. But this is the simple way to interface, and it would be stupid to make it complicated. If you want the straight scoop, contact the manufacturer of the controller.
